After meeting with the rock cover band, Cards for
Today, I educated myself about the origin behind their name. Medical students use a program called
Anki Cards for studying
purposes, and a phrase they often use when speaking with each other is, "What's in the cards for today?"
Therefore, the star in Anki Cards branding in conjunction with the classic 4 suit card deck inspired me in
my design process.

The final logo for Cards for Today
After meeting the band members and learning more about them as musicians, medical students, and as people, I
found that the bands' personality felt solid and traditional, and felt that a chunky slab serif typeface was
the way to go.I also wanted to stylize the “For” to make the design reminiscent of 1920's packaging.
Finally, I wanted to call back to a deck of cards, and what better card than the most iconic Ace of Spades!
With a simple inversion, I flipped the A in “Today.”
Color
I chose these colors as they are the same as on a standard deck of playing cards. White as the base card;
black for spades and clubs; and red for diamonds and hearts. In one of our review calls, I jokingly asked if
the band members knew about how some decks used to come with a fifth suit, which they did not. But, we agreed
that adding a fourth color would just complicate the design further.
